Summary of “Lil Nas X is the King of the Crossover”

In the New York Times Magazine’s Music Issue for 2020, Wesley Morris wrote a piece entitled “Lil Nas X is the King of the Crossover” in which he discussed success of the singer’s hit song “Old Town Road.” Flying in the face of convention even musicians from other genres, such as Christone (Kingfish) Ingram, are incorporating Lil Nas X’s song “Old Town Road” into their concerts. Ingram connected Prince to “Old Town Road” in a way that made the song feel like time-honored legacy music. Spending 19 weeks at the top of the charts, “Old Town Road” has been remixed many times and now stands for groups of people coming together to drive change. Despite each remix adding more time to the song’s length, the 2020 Grammy’s proved that the song still had more room to grow. Adding their own creativity to the song were several other well-known musicians such as BTS, Miley Cyrus, and DJ Diplo.
